Pilot Aapda Mitra Scheme

NDMA implemented a pilot scheme for Training of Community Volunteers focused on training of 6000 community volunteers (200 volunteers per district) in flood response in selected 30 most flood prone districts of 25 States/UTs . The Scheme was operational upto 31st March, 2021.

Altogether 5513 community volunteers have been trained by 24 Project States

Highlights of the work done by Aapda Mitra volunteers:

  • Aapda Mitra volunteers of Haridwar District in Uttarakhand saved 125 people during Kawad Yatra from drowning during 2018-19;
  • Aapda Mitra volunteers of Gorakhpur District in Uttar Pradesh saved 35 people in Boat accident in Gola Tahsil of Gorakhpur on 20.08.2020;
  • Services of the volunteers also utilized in Ganga Sagar Mela-2020 for crowed management in West Bengal;
  • The volunteers were engaged in Early Warning Dissemination and evacuating the vulnerable sections of the community like old age persons, pregnant women, children, persons with disabilities, patients and other vulnerable section of the community during Cyclone Fani-2019 in Odisha.

In COVID 19 pandemic, the trained Aapda Mitra have worked to support the District Administration in following activities:

  • Community Surveillance to enforce lock down and social distancing in public places;
  • Home delivery of essential items such as food, ration, medicines for women headed households, senior citizens, persons with disabilities;
  • Logistic support in running and monitoring quarantine & isolation centers;
  • Dissemination of information & awareness generation at public places and doorsteps to promote masses for using face mask, maintaining social distancing, and practicing hand hygiene.
